- Fitness Update...

At the start of February, I mentioned that I wanted to up my fitness game (here). Now we're into April, I would say I'm pretty happy with the amount of exercise I currently do. I'd like to mention that I'm not aiming to lose weight; I'm naturally thin and, if anything, I'm aiming to gain some through healthy fats and protein (and leftover Easter egg...), but exercise is still so important for internal health, building strength, toning and for the mind.

We're constantly informed about the importance of regular physical activity and the benefits it brings. I want to emphasise the importance of finding something you enjoy. The moment you see exercise as a chore, your motivation will switch to zero. It should be something you enjoy and makes you happy both during and afterwards. For me, these are yoga, bouldering and running.


YOGA:

I featured yoga in my 'March Favourites' post (here) and mentioned the #30DaysOfYoga Youtube videos brought to us by the hilarious (and top babe) @yogawithadriene. It's safe to say I instantly fell in love with yoga and felt surprised I hadn't tried it out before. I willingly carried out each video for the 30 days and have happily continued to practice yoga afterwards.

These videos really are great for any level, especially if you need a boost of confidence before attending a class and/or want to gain knowledge on common moves and terms. Adriene mixes up the routines perfectly, ranging from more intense workouts to calmer sequences. From carrying out these 30 videos, I can now create my own routines and can't see my life without it. Not only does it increase strength and flexibility, but it also relaxes the mind. We're all guilty of getting wrapped up in our daily routines and busy schedules that we forget to put some time aside to wind down. I want to thank Adriene for introducing me to this new hobby and urge you all to give it a go!


BOULDERING:

Another reason I love yoga is because it's really helped with my climbing. I've been bouldering regularly for just over a year now and have got to the stage where I'm really trying to up my technique. A lot of the time, being successful on climbing routes comes down to knowing where to place your weight, leaning in a certain direction or twisting upwards, and I feel that yoga has helped with my alignment and body awareness.

Not only is bouldering a really social and fun sport, but it's great for your fitness. It works muscle groups from head to toe, builds strength and challenges your mind. If you're scared of heights, don't let that put you off; I am too and often tell myself it's good to be aware of your ability and to stay safe - we wouldn't want to completely lose that fear!


RUNNING:

Another sport I really enjoy is running. If you're feeling irritable or stressed, I can't recommend it enough as it's a great way to refresh your mind and the release of endorphins will vastly improve your mood. The thing I really like about running is that you just need a good pair of shoes and you're ready to go! For me, Asics are the winners as they feel like I'm literally running on cushions. If you're unsure which ones to purchase, they carry out a running style analysis to offer you the best shoe for your 'Foot ID'.

My current goal is to run 10K without stopping, and then after that I'll aim to do it at a decent speed and will hopefully participate in an event. I hands down would struggle with my training without using a running app. If you're a beginner the C25K is seriously amazing and then the 5 to 10K training app afterwards is equally as good. These apps track each of your sessions and build you up by gradually increasing your running time and decreasing walking time. If you follow it properly and stick to running three times a week with rest days in between, they really do work! I've actually been left pretty amazed at how the body adjusts and improves.

So there's my fitness update! I've realised that all three of my top sports interlink as I carry out warm-up and cool down yoga sequences before and after running to avoid any muscle pain the following day. I love doing all three of these and never dread any which is why I want to stress the importance of discovering what works for you!

I hope I have inspired and/or motivated some of you.

  1. I love love love yoga. I tried out the thirty day challenge and then found a Body Balance class near me which is a mix of yoga, tai chi and pilates - such a brilliant work out. I also really love high energy cardio classes :)

  4. I've always wanted to do yoga! i tried it once and it was a lot harder than I thought so that is definitely something I would love to get back into to get my strength, tone and flexibility up!

  7. I just did Day 11 of the 30 days of yoga challenge with Adriene. She's such a positive and inspiring person. Love her! I love running too but unfortunately haven't been able to stay on track for long time now. I hope to be more consistent with the warmer days. xx

  8. I used to do long distance running regularly but really let myself get out of it and now my speeds for just 5k are awful. Hopefully going to get back into the swing of things and try those apps out! Great post, I'd love to try bouldering too at some point! xx

  11. You are doing so well with everything, bouldering looks like so much fun, I love rock climbing but with ropes hehe! I'm trying to gain some weight too and have been eating nakd bars im obsessed with them! They are good fats and the nuts are really good for you :) I've been switching between swimming and blogilates, but i really need to get my ass in gear and start some yoga too :) xxx

  14. Sounds like you are doing really well, congrats! :) I would love to try rock climbing, but it is quite scary looking. I also tried yoga but at the time wasn't a huge fan, I spend about 15 - 20 minutes stretching a day though so I might start again.

  17. I've seen all of your bouldering photos and intagram and always think it looks like so much fun! As with the 10k even if you can't run it without stopping or have a really crappy time just do an event. It is so much fun and because there is a bunch of people doing it together it goes by before you even notice it and ends up showing you what you are capable of even when you aren't fully trained and prepared. It's really great for running confidence.

    Other than running I do a little bit of weights and pilates at the gym. I also love hiking but I don't really get time for that.

Due to health reasons I can't do exhausting sports like running and Zumba, but I do enjoy cycling and a lazy swim in the pool. I should really give Yoga a try as it looks like something I can cope with. Just need to overcome my level of laziness :) Hope you're well and we'll speak soon.

  19. Sincerely you are now my fitspo I am seriously imrpessed, I hardly ever do yoga maybe every two weeks? But mainly because life does take over hahah and I should have a break but don't! I only do HIIT classes and my workout at home but would love to start running too, you have some impressive goals xxx

  20. I'll be checking the 30 Days of Yoga after this, I wanted to the last time I read it on your favourite post but forgotten about it. Will start doing it from tomorrow onwards, I love yoga but time has been seriously lacking these past few weeks. Hopefully I'll stick to it as you did.

  24. Hi Karen, I do like yoga for relaxing. I was surprised how it works out most muscles too when I tried it. Right now I just do general cardio. I like the thought of rock climbing because as you said it does work out a lot of muscles, especially the upper body which I do need. But I am too wimpy for that lol. It is awesome that you do it!

  27. Lovely goals and lovely tips~~ I should maybe try those sneakers. Sadly I inherited my Mom's bad knees and had to cut back on running after my last race :(:( Bouldering seriously sounds awesome

  28. These exercises are very inspiring! I agree with you about how exercise should be fun and not a chore in your mind. I enjoy swing dancing and lifting weights. Blogging has actually relieved most of my stress lol.

  30. wow you've definitely motivated me to get exercising again. I think running, yoga and some youtube workout videos are what will work best for me. Definitely trying to 30 days of yoga challenge though!

  31. I've been slowly upping my fitness too, it's such a great mood lifter when I'm feeling a little down. Yoga and pilates are definitely my go-to, and I want to try running since the weather is getting better. I do a couple of the other '30 days' routines and they're so fun.
