- Ditching Foundation...

I thought I'd focus today's post on my love for lighter makeup bases. I've never really been one who wears a full coverage foundation daily (unless we count those dreaded days spent as a 15 year old experimenting with Maybelline's dream matte mousse, but I'd rather forget those). With us now well into Spring and with the emergence of Summer before we know it, most of us are now favouring lighter base products...because who enjoys a clammy cakey face where skin can't breathe? AMIRITE?

Applying makeup has become an automatic behaviour for a lot of us, and we each have our own little routines. Foundation is arguably at the forefront of this as it provides the base for following products and impacts the overall appearance of our skin. But do we really need it? In my opinion, a lot of us apply a heavy foundation when either a) it's not needed at all, or b) across the entire face rather than just, say, the T-zone area.

Recently, I've been having more no makeup days over rocking a full face of makeup, but when I do want a little something to perk my skin up, I've been reaching for CC creams. My two favourites have to be this Olay CC cream*, which will forever make me think of a Mr.Whippy ice cream, and the CC cream that's become hugely popular with beauty bloggers (and rightly so): the Bourjois Perfect 123 CC cream.

CC creams feel so light on the skin, blend beautifully and contain colour correcting properties whilst providing hydration at the same time. Alternatively, there's tinted moisturisers which I'm also a fan of. Don't forget that you can always make your own; mix a tiny blob of foundation together with your daily moisturiser to form a much lighter base!

To apply any base products, I dot some onto my face using clean hands and then dab it in using the Spectrum Flat Top brush. If you're yet to use a flat top brush like this then I thoroughly recommend you do: it's a serious game changer! I then swirl around the Real Techniques Buffing brush to ensure everything is blended in.

Ditching founation doesn't necessarily mean you also have to ditch concealer - just make sure it is blended in thoroughly. I've repurchased the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer for years now, but even though I'm still a big fan, the Maybelline Age Rewind Eraser may surpass it. In my opinion, the formula works a lot better for under the eyes as it's not as thick. At first, I thought the palest shade was too dark/orange for me, but once blended in with the Spectrum Concealer brush, I've found that the yellow-y tones disguise any under the eye discoloration perfectly. It's also effective for covering up spots, but if any major beasts do arise, then it's the Collection one I'd reach for.

Have you tried any of these products? Let me know what your holy grail base product is!

  3. Totally agree with a lighter base for the hotter months - I always feel so gross if it's like 23 degrees out and I've got a full face of foundation! I'm a fan of tinted moisturisers/BB creams but I haven't given CC creams a go as of late so these are definitely some I wanna try out :)

  4. Oh my word, I need that Spectrum flat brush, it's GORGEOUS!
I'm working on my skin at the moment, it needs some serious tlc before I can even consider ditching the foundation but that Olay CC cream looks very interesting. I'm a sucker for pretty products :)

  5. Great post! I haven't tried either of these yet but will pick them up. I hate the feeling of thick foundation or a lot of makeup on my face, so I don't wear foundation daily either. Have you tried the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream? That's my current go to for everyday!

  7. Such a lovely post, I'm going on holiday in a few weeks time and hate wearing make up apart from in the evenings but even then I much prefer something lighter so that my skin can breathe. I might have to go out and purchase these.

  11. Great post, so timely for me because the last few months I have been wearing only a little bit of concealer during the day. Letting skin breathe alright!

  13. I've never used anything like this before, I think I should do the same because I shouldn't always use my heavy foundation for everything even for days out. Great post!

  14. I am definitely using cc creams and tinted moisturisers instead now and love using brushes as much as I am devoted to my little beauty blender, I always find bourjois doesn't go pale enough for me though as I used their healthy balance foundation before and it was the lightest colour but so dark :( Definitely will try the Olay one xxx

  15. I haven't heard of these before but I totally agree with you! Now that it's getting warmer it's better to have light coverage :)
I'm so using that tip, mixing my foundation with moisturiser, thanks!

  16. I'm one of those people that feels much better when I've got a nice layer of foundation or BB/CC cream on! I'm a huge fan of Bourjois' offering, just as much as I am a fan of their Healthy Mix Serum. I do like a lovely light coverage in the hotter months. Nothing worse than a thick foundation melting off your face haha! I really want to try the Maybelline concealer, I've heard so many good things about it! I keep forgetting to buy it though. But I might get it on payday as I'm suffering pretty dark circles atm!

  20. I rarely wear foundation, I just use a colour correcting serum and a brightening primer and then I'll add some blushers and eye make up. I hate the cakey make up look!
(Totes remember trying the maybelline matte mouse foundation - worst idea ever!)

  21. I have been using BB creams but never CC creams however, I am intrigued about the Olay one. It's not cheap though and I've read mixed reviews on it. :-/

  22. I am also preferring a light base over heavy foundations these days, as I find that they can sit on top of the skin if they are really heavy. I didn't find the Bourjois version as amazing as very one else but I will have to give it another chance soon to see if I still feel the same x

  24. Usually I would always go for a tinted moisturiser or other light base for the spring/summer months but my skin is annoyingly rubbish lately which makes it a bit difficult! I know wearing a lot of foundation isn't great for your skin though so maybe I will try mixing it with moisturiser or just use a high coverage concealer like the Collection one :)

  28. Fab post, I've been trying to break away from foundation for a while, but quite often chicken out and end up coating my face in a thick layer of MAC studiofix, oops!
I really want to try the Olay CC cream... I'm not sure if thats as it reminds me of an ice cream, or that it looks good - but I'll give it a go! :)

  29. I more than often have no makeup on, do I look better with makeup on probably but the hassle of applying it everyday and what it does to your skin is not great. A BB cream is a great alternative. I like the sound of the Olay cream especially if it is like Mr Whippy Lucy x
